Principal Keeper's daily journal, 1917-1918, 1938.

This series contains the only existing volumes of the daily journal that was maintained by Sing Sing Prison's Principal Keeper. The journal provides a daily summary of information on the inmate population and the prison staff. Volume One covers September 11, 1917 to July 7, 1918 while Volume Two covers May 3 to June 10, 1938.

New York's first state prison, Newgate, opened in New York City in 1797. Newgate was quickly found to be unsatisfactory due to poor construction and the impossibility of developing viable industries. As a result, a commission was formed in 1825 (Chapter 25) for the purpose of building a new state prison in the first or second senatorial district, based on the design of Auburn Prison, which opened in 1816. Bushwick Correctional Facility, located in Brooklyn, New York, was also known as Bushwick Rehabilitation Center and Bushwick Community Based Center.
